The coins are round in shape with a raised rim on the obverse and the reverse. The coins’ edge is grained.

Obverse

on the left-hand side — the relief image of the State Coat of Arms of the Republic of Belarus and the inscription in two lines under it: РЭСПУБЛIКА БЕЛАРУСЬ (THE REPUBLIC OF BELARUS) and the year of issue below; and on the right-hand side — the denomination: 20 РУБЛЁЎ (20 RUBLES) on the silver coin and 1 РУБЕЛЬ (1 RUBLE) on the copper-nickel one and the alloy standard under it on the silver coin.

Reverse

an art design featuring on the right-hand side — a fragment of the political map of Belarus at the end of the First World War with the borderline plotted thereon under the Treaty of Riga; and on the left-hand side — the pattern of looming thunder clouds symbolizing global tragedy which partially overlaps the inscription in three lines: ПЕРШАЯ СУСВЕТНАЯ ВАЙНА (THE FIRST WORLD WAR).
