The coins are round in shape with a raised rim on the obverse and the reverse. The edge of the coins is reeded.

Obverse: at the top — the relief image of the State Coat of Arms of the Republic of Belarus and the circumferential inscription: РЭСПУБЛIКА БЕЛАРУСЬ (THE REPUBLIC OF BELARUS); in the center — a fragment of an engraving showing the Sun, the Moon, and stars; on the right — the alloy standard on silver coins; at the bottom along the rim — the denomination: 20 РУБЛЁЎ (20 RUBLES) on silver coins and 1 РУБЕЛЬ (1 RUBLE) on copper-nickel coins and the year of issue.

Reverse: in the center — the stylized image of Leo and at the top the inscription: LEO; on the left-hand side – the zodiac sign of the constellation inlaid with Swarovski crystals (on silver coins).
