The coins are round in shape with the raised rim on the obverse and the reverse. The coins’ edge is grained.

Obverse

at the top – the relief image of the State Coat of Arms of the Republic of Belarus, along the coin’s rim there are circumferential inscriptions: at the top – РЭСПУБЛІКА БЕЛАРУСЬ (THE REPUBLIC OF BELARUS), at the bottom — the denomination: 20 РУБЛЁЎ (20 RUBLES) on the silver coin and 1 РУБЕЛЬ (1 RUBLE) on the copper-nickel coin, to the left — the year of issue, to the right – the alloy standard (on the silver coin); in the centre – the image of the Upper Town panorama from the bird’s eye view and the coat of arms of Minsk.

Reverse

in the centre – the stylized image of "The Battle on the Nemiga River" miniature from the "Radziwill Chronicle", which is the literature monument of the early 13th century, below it there are three lines of historic names of the city: МЪНЬСКЪ, МЕНЕСК, МЕНСК (MINSK), at the bottom – a circumferential inscription МІНСК. 950 ГАДОЎ (MINSK.950 YEARS).
