The Olympic Games originated in Greece in 776 B.C. and were abolished in 394 A.D., being not only a sporting event, but also a symbol of peace, fairness, honor, and dignity of Hellas.

The "Olympic Belarus" commemorative coins series was issued to honor the centenary of the present–day Olympic movement which was founded owing to the efforts of Baron Pierre de Coubertin, French public figure and long–time president of the International Olympic Committee.

Belarusian athletes have been participating in the Olympic Games since 1952: initially as members of the USSR team and then, in 1992, as members of the CIS united team. Belarus made its debut at the 1994 winter Olympic Games in Lillehammer (Norway).

All coins of the series feature the emblem of the National Olympic Committee of the Republic of Belarus, the highest governing body of the Olympic movement in the country, which was set up on March 22, 1991, and is a permanent member of the International Olympic Committee.
